On July 2, 1964, the United States passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This act prohibited discrimination in the workplace against employees based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin... in 1964.
1964 was only 54 years ago. To bring it closer to home for me, that’s just 22 years before I was born! It’s amazing to think that our nation moves so fast in other areas of life besides basic human rights. We are witnessing this today with the trump (yes I used a lower-case T on purpose) administration and the racial and cultural injustices that are being condoned from the white house. The unethical and immoral deportation and modern-day concentration camps of immigrants is sickening! But, when you really pause to think about it, it wasn’t that long ago that the government saw fit to PROHIBIT discrimination. So is all of this really that far fetched? Can we be shocked at the old white men in power who were just young boys when their parents’ businesses were forced to integrate? They were birthed into a society that thrived on segregation and the demoralizing of humans for being different. This is the way people running our nation have been told their ENTIRE lives, that they are superior and to get rid of and oppress the inferior. *insert Kanye Shrug*
